Troy in Berkeley offers a casually inviting spot for anyone craving Greek flavors rooted in straightforward, satisfying preparations. Located on Solano Avenue, this restaurant fits comfortably into the neighborhood’s eclectic dining scene, drawing both locals and visitors who appreciate an easygoing meal centered around classic Mediterranean dishes.

The dining experience at Troy leans toward relaxed and unpretentious. The interior feels warm without being fussy, making it a good choice for a casual dinner or a low-key lunch. It’s a place where you might drop by after a stroll through the area, or meet friends for shareable plates and conversation without the formality of fine dining.

When it comes to food, the menu highlights familiar favorites like lamb souvlaki, gyro wraps, and dolmas, which tend to satisfy those looking for traditional Greek comfort food done reliably. Several diners have found the house-made spicy sauce a memorable touch, adding a bit of boldness to the plates. The falafel starter also stands out with its accompanying cilantro cream and romesco-type sauces, offering something a little different from the usual Mediterranean spread.

Though the overall food quality generally meets expectations, a few guests have noted occasional misses — like dryness in the salmon or less distinctive flavors in spanakopita — hinting that the kitchen sometimes swings between solid and uneven. This might make Troy best suited for those who appreciate hearty, familiar fare over adventurous or elevated interpretations of Greek cuisine.

The service here is consistently friendly and attentive, contributing to a welcoming atmosphere that suits both solo diners and small groups. Whether you’re stopping in for a gyro bowl or tackling the meza platter (with substitutions for dietary needs, like extra olives for vegans), you can expect a no-frills meal grounded in tradition.

The best time to visit feels like early evenings or weekend dinners when you can settle in and savor the laid-back vibe without feeling rushed. The spot might not be the place for polished presentations but works well as a neighborhood favorite for those who enjoy approachable, straightforward Greek food in a modest setting.

This has needed an update for years and let's begin. 6/10/2025 Recently I've took my sister here as we're both trying to avoid foods cooked with a lot of oil like Chinese food. She's a chef and has been in the business for over 40 years and spent the last 6 years as a chef and was managing food trucks in North Carolina. A long distance from her Napa gourmet restaurant roots. Tonight she ordered the lamb souvlaki. I ordered a small chicken shawarma wrap and lentil soup. The chicken shawarma was perfect. Just be warned, it is with pita bread so it's a bit messy of a handheld eat. But what the heck. It was absolutely delicious. The chicken was perfectly cooked as it was quite tender. Nicely caramelized onions inside. Loved the lentil soup. It had a nice helping of lentils, not just a few little bits floating around as you see in some places. Which now brings me to the lamb souvlaki. Now my doctor insists that I don't eat too much meat and I totally agree. However, I could have eaten this for a week. It was some of the best lamb I have tasted in years, maybe over 20 years. Tasted fresh, it was perfectly tender, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Not over salted, thank God which is something a lot of restaurants do with meat, especially grilled meat or meat. kebobs. My sister was very impressed and pretty much polished off the whole thing. She noted that there were no salt and pepper shakers which she totally appreciated because it meant that the cook knew exactly what he or she was doing. I did take that last bit of her grilled zucchini, which in itself was quite delicious. This was the second time I took her. Last time I had the falafel shawarma wrap and I recommend that as well. I got the large one and it was quite substantial. Sister may have had the chicken souvlaki I don't remember. Just noted down below that I did my first review 6 years ago. I have since returned multiple times quite often bringing family because it's not too crowded, the food is really good and the prices are very reasonable. They do a reasonable amount of takeout which is probably why there aren't as many occupied tables as before. 6 yrs ago Nice greek food, but the french fries. OMG.... sorry short on details as this was a month or two ago. Will return.

The hummus is really good. My salmon was super dry and didn't have much flavor. The spanakopita didn't have that "spanakopita" flavor like most. My husband didn't care for his food at all. The place is cute and the staff is nice.

Been coming here every year when I visit the area except during the pandemic. Still delicious and great service. I've had a lot of the dishes, all great tasting. Had the Chicken Shawarma and Spanikopita twice. Loved it. As you might see in the pics, I dug into the food and forgot to take the pics first time I went. The second time was takeout. Was so good . If you're looking for some great tasting food and friendly fast service...Troy is your place

Pretty good beef and lamb skewers with rice and their white sauce, on top of the appetizer we ordered with hummus. One comment though on the food (not sure if it’s the beef or the lamb skewer), is that i don’t think the skewer was as fresh as it could have been, hoping that this is just a one off. Overall, the servers were nice and the they have a nice relaxing atmosphere.

We love this place. The homemade spicy sauce they serve here is out of this world good. We enjoy the group, Big enough to split, but you won't want to. My hubby tried the plate which was good but our favorite is still the house gyro. Slices of deliciously spiced meat wrapped in a soft warm bread & fresh lettuce tomato & onion inside. Prices are great and so is the service. Always friendly and we love coming here

We only had three items but they were very good. The Gyros Wrap and the Gyros Platter. Both extremely yummy. Great texture in the wrap. Loved it. The harmon fries were spectacular! Really garlicky. And the texture was perfect. Awesome crispness. A little on the pricey side overall but a nice treat.

Troy has the best french fries in town, maybe in the entire East Bay. Get the Greek Fries--crispy on the outside and never greasy. The portion is huge and will disappear minutes after hitting the table. Addictive! Very friendly service. A great spot.
